We know God wants us to give, and we equate giving to the church - TopicsExpress

We know God wants us to give, and we equate giving to the church as giving to God. Yet God does not necessarily equate giving to the church as giving to Him! He says that when we give to the poor, the needy, the hungry, the homeless, the naked... thats giving to Him. (See Prov 19:17, Matt 10:43, Matt 25:40, Duet 15:7 as a few examples). When you give at The Lighthouse Church your giving is not being used to pay for ongoing administrative costs, its being used to do things like build homes for the homeless, feed the hungry, and clothe the naked. Helping the poor and the needy is not something we do once a year through a special offering... its what we do 1st, foremost, and always as a result of our love for others and in what we believe is direct obedience to God. We are now collecting and saving money to build another home in Haiti. Each home costs between $5500 and $7000, uses Haitian resources to build, and employs Haitian people to do the labor. This is VERY good for them. This is our 3rd home. There is no question that we are to give. God wants us to steward the resources He gives us, which are different amounts for each of us (the parable of the talents) in such a way that we can use them for His purposes. The question then becomes: Are we stewarding our resources responsibly before God? He will require an accounting from all of us.
