We know Thomas Hunt Morgan primarily for his work in genetics - the famous fruit fly experiments. But he began and ended his career as an embryologist and made important contributions to that field. His first book, The Development of the Frog Egg (1897) took the same rigorous experimental approach to a carefully chosen model organism that characterized his later genetics work.
