We know that both teachers and parents are passionate about the success of their students. Many of us wrestle with busy professional and family lives, which sometimes keep us from having meaningful conversations. When we cannot find the appropriate space, co-creating solutions is difficult. So, to help strengthen the relationships between teachers and parents, to help encourage trust and mutual understandings, we want to lead an important community conversation about how we treat each other. Darryl Murphy, a parent actively involved in Falcon Zone schools, signed up for the open forum Nov. 13 during a Board of Education monthly meeting in District 49. He brought up concerns with bullying: “This is really about the abusive language that not only our kids have to go through sometimes amongst themselves, but also our teachers, administrators and principals have to go through on a daily basis by some of the parents that are in this community. Some of it’s very disrespectful, certainly very combative.” Do you share the concern that teachers may be getting approached unfairly? Should there be a board policy regarding parent communications with schools? What should parents consider when contacting teachers? How should teachers expect to be treated by parents? You can join the conversation here, or head to the “Community Support” channel on the district website (d49.org/discuss), or the “Parents & Community” channel on your school’s website. Only registered visitors may view and contribute to these discussion area. Comments are immediately posted in chronological order. -Matt Meister Director of Communications
