We know that the people that have been in this group for a long time are aware of this information but we are compelled to post this information again because there seems to be a number of new members. If you have questions please make a comment or send me a private message. Natural behavior of Sulcata hatchlings and yearlings. Please dont keep your Sulcata hatchlings in a dry (low humidity) enclosure with just some sort of wood chips or alfalfa pellets and a water bowl. It is very un-natural and not healthy for these animals. We are aware of numerous hatchlings that have died from being raised in dry enclosures or have reoccurring life long respiratory infections and numerous other viral and bacterial infections of the organ systems. These infections are due to the fact that their immune system has been weakened from being raised in a dry enclosure. Keeping them in dry enclosure will also cause pyramiding. Just because some people have gotten away with keeping their Sulcata in a dry enclosure and everything seems to be ok doesnt mean that its good advice to be spreading around. Sulcata hatchlings and yearlings dont come above ground much. Youll never see a hatchling Sulcata just walking around out in the open, hot, dry air. Theyd get picked off by a host of predators instantaneously. They stay underground in warm humid burrows most of the time or bury themselves into the damp root balls of plants. The babies dont start showing themselves in broad day light above ground until they reach the 8-10 mark. This information comes directly from the mouth of my friend Tomas Diagne. He is the founder of the African Chelonian Institute in Senegal Africa. He was born and raised there and has been studying wild sulcatas in their native range since he was a little boy. I dont say these things and come up with these assertions lightly. ✌️
