We know that without God’s grace, we are dead in sin (verse 1, Rom. 7:18; 8:6–8). We cannot do anything good on our own. So as we work out our salvation, we know that “it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). It is the Lord who sanctifies, who makes his people holy (Lev. 20:8). He is the one who makes his people willing to work for him (Hag. 1:14), who stirs them to generous giving and devotion to the Lord’s work (1 Chron. 29:14–19; compare 1 Kings 8:5–8). Though we are not sinlessly perfect in this life (1 John 1:8–10), he is working to perfect in us the image of Christ (Jer. 32:39–40; Eph. 5:25–27). So we pray that God will enable us to please him.
