We know those of you who could not attend the volunteer meeting - TopicsExpress

We know those of you who could not attend the volunteer meeting last night are anxious to hear the details. It was a very fun and exciting meeting, one of the best weve attended so far, and many people showed up....more than BCSO anticipated!! Sheriff Ivey stated he is very excited to take on this transition, it was not their original intent but his wife convinced him to take on the shelters as well as enforcement. He said he couldnt take over the shelters knowing animals will be killed, his wife said do it!!! So now he wants to make it a model for all to see and use. Statistically, 37% of female prisoners will reoffend....only 14% of the Paws & Stripes girls have reoffended!!! That show how great the program is!! Failure is NOT an option!! Customer service comes first!!! If people show up early, before open hours, the shelters are not considered closed and they should be greeted with come on in!!! Management personnel will be IN the shelters, not sitting in an office in Viera, which will be a great change! They are currently doing visits to other facilities and going through No Kill and TNR materials provided by Terri Dyer and Debbie Rich. Major Susan Jeter is his first and only choice to operate the program with her 28 years of service, her love and knowledge of animals, and the Paws & Stripes program. Deputy Tracey Wisner will be the volunteer point of contact. She will be in charge of volunteers and all community outreach and events. She is a very professional and cordial person and will handle the position well. Because volunteers will be working with or around inmates it is crucial that BCSO does a background screening and drug screen. Inmates will be doing construction and working with the animals so it is imperative that volunteers pass the background and drug screening. This is for the benefit of all. References will be checked as well. Roger Alexander, BCSO Chaplain and volunteer coordinator for all of BCSO, was on hand to explain the application process. The applications for volunteers will be online after 1pm today. Take your time filling them out, answer EVERY question truthfully....omitting an answer will disqualify you so be careful to fill it out completely. Give yourself about an hour to complete the application. Answer truthfully, not everything is disqualifying if asked on an application....be honest and list all. If you have any questions concerning the application, the helpline number is 321.264.5212. Many things were discussed. PJ Pup program will continue. They are working on ideas and ways to use younger volunteers in the future but for now volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Plans include a behaviorist too! Eventually Sheriff Ivey plans to move NACC to Camp Rd. Structural changes will include social areas and hours will be adjusted to accommodate working people, etc. This is a process but wont happen overnight. Pet Posse will be doing marketing, donations, and acquiring fosters. Fosters will not be required to pass a background check since they wont be in the shelters. Any and all concerns or problems with the volunteers must be given according to the chain of command. Sheriff Ivey stated he does not want to hear complaints via the news or in emails to him without following the direct chain of command. The chain is Tracey Wisner FIRST!! She will contact Major Jeter who will, in turn, share whatever is not resolved with Sheriff Wayne Ivey. There was so much discussed that some things might be missing here so, hopefully, anyone who attended the meeting and has additional info, please post in the comments here. October cant come soon enough for the animals and we are so excited that this will make Brevard County the one to watch!!! Failure is NOT an option!!! :)
