We know we have students studying right around the world, but when - TopicsExpress

We know we have students studying right around the world, but when we put out our Where in the World survey, there was one place we didnt expect to hear from... Antarctica! UNE student Shane Kern contacted us from Casey Research Station, where he has been stationed since November 2013, working for the Australian Antarctic Division. Shane decided to undertake study with UNE to formalise his experience and further his studies while he had the opportunity to do so. And by that we mean that for 8 months of the year, during the Antarctic winter, he and 18 other researchers had no physical contact with the outside world. He maintains that despite that somehow weve managed to remain great friends. Its an amazing place to live and work, he said. And whilst the isolation and extreme climate can take its toll, its the little things that make you really sit back and think wow, this place is like no other. Such as going for a bicycle ride with your friends across the ocean to nearby islands, sitting in the mess eating breakfast whilst icebergs the size of small cities float past, driving vehicles over plateau ice that is several kilometres thick, and seeing the many animals that consider this home. Shane, who will finish his stint in Antarctica in February is completing a Pathways Enabling Course and has applied to continue his studies with the Bachelor of Organisational Leadership. He was generous enough to share some incredible images of his experiences at Casey for you to enjoy. Give Shane a thumbs up!
