We like to think of AMERICA as the greatest country on Earth , and at one time , in the somewhat recent past , there was no questioning that ... not so long ago , America repeatedly sent men to the moon , and brought them back safely ... now we cannot even put a man in orbit , ... not so long ago America was the leader of the world , when it came to the manufacture of automobiles , now , Detroit is on the verge of bankruptcy along with dozens of other once great American cities , ... not so long ago America was the bread basket of the world .... now we saturate our crops with pesticides ... and pay our farmers to leave their fields fallow ... and barren .. while entire populations , struggle with hunger ... not so long ago , America was a model of sustainable business practices , that promoted integrity and reliability , durability and quality ... now it is get a profit and get out , and screw the dedicated worker in the process , and set adrift the loyal employee when they retire , while their pension is raided and defunded .... not so long ago , America was a shining beacon of democracy in action ... now our elected representatives use mass punishment tactics , upon the citizenry ( as they shut down the government ) , that they are sworn to serve , at the expense of those who elected them . ..... what have we come to ????
