We like to think of WWII as a war that took place far away from the contiguous US but have you ever wondered how close it really came? During WWII, German U-boats dominated the Atlantic Ocean by sinking hundreds, if not thousands of Allied ships. U-166 was the U-boat that was sunk closest to the US. How close? ~25 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
