We live in a society which objects to the something for nothing - TopicsExpress

We live in a society which objects to the something for nothing culture, the sense if entitlement if you will. When we say sense of entitlement, what are we really saying? What are they entitled to, or not entitled to? Why are they not entitled to it, what do they have to do to earn it? The easiest thing to assert thst people arent entitled to is luxury items and luxury lifestyles. People want fast cars, bigger houses, better gadgets, and more more more. And that is wrong. Luxuries are things we work to achieve, we have to do a lot to get them, they are prizes. But what do they represent? They represent happiness. They are not happiness, but this is how they are sold to us. We are told people wont think badly of us in a better car, we have a better quality of life with gadgets and gizmos. We can have a better family life in a house with more space, etc. So these people are pursuing, not the objects and the lifestyles, but the idea that these represent happiness, and without them, they cannot be happy. So, a sense of entitlement is a sense that we should be entitled to a happy life. Are we not all entitled tona happy life? What reason could there be for someone not to deserve happiness? Laziness is often the argument made against entitlement. People who live on benefits with no interest in finding work, do not contribute to society, and so on. And yet, these people are the very representations of the materialistic world. They only want greater and greater things. They dont do enough to deserve them, perhaps, but what is enough? How much does a person need to do? We use money to measure the value of things, but money is not controlled, it is free to be distributed. We have minimum wage, so people have to be paid a certain wage, but then we have zero hour contracts, where work cannot be guaranteed. And they cannot reject the offer, because they will be forced to give up all that they currently live on. People are being forced into working under bad conditions. Is it a sense of entitlement that a person should be given a living wage whilst employed? Or is that part of the something for nothing culture? With a group of people who are essentially forgotten by the very people who chastise them, a sense of entitlement is a smack in the face. It does not just boil down to a sense of being entitled to happiness, but being entitled to living. Yes, we cannot go through life living only for ourselves, but we support it when people become super rich for it. Is that not hypocritical? A sense of entitlement should be encouraged. The more we feel we are entitled to happiness, the more we understand that we deserve happiness, and no one has the right to say that we do not deserve it, that someone else deserves it more, the more willing we will be to do what we can to ensure we get to keep it. And a final point: before we judge others about what they do and dont do, ask what they have lived, and have not lived. Have they had the same opportunities I have had? Are they as able as I am? Was their upbringing better or worse than mine? Does that make a difference, and what difference does it make? Also, can we really compare lives at all? You are entitled to happiness. No matter what you are.
