We live in an age where disaster strikes in the morning newspaper each day. Whether it is climate change, disasters throughout the world or the Ebola virus it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the massive nature of the problems we face. As an individual it is easy to let ourselves be paralyzed to inaction in the process. The looming disappearance of the millions of honeybees affected by modern pesticides containing neonic’s is but one more area of concern. Fortunately, as individuals, there is opportunity to contribute towards a solution. Here in Nebraska in particular we are surrounded by farm fields saturated with chemicals harmful to bees and of questionable influence on human beings. As pointed out in their recent guest editorial printed in the Independent, according to the Sacramento Bee, scientists have been working on trying to solve the mystery of honeybees which have been disappearing worldwide. Insecticides developed to maximize crop production have created the equivalent of the fisherman’s net which destroys the dolphin population while reaping the tuna harvest. Like the Aesop’s fable about the crane, who happens to be taken up with the crows in the farmers’ fields, we are destroying the beneficial insects which play a vital role in pollinating our fruits and vegetables. The bee’s need to have a healthy diet available to them, also. Like us, if the refrigerator is full of healthy snacks and we don’t bring chips into the house, our eating habits will improve. As gardeners and home owners we can provide healthy alternatives to these beneficial insects by paying attention to the kind of trees and flowers we plant in our urban environment. There are many web sites offering information to gardeners interested in creating a bee friendly environment. Or you can contact the Nebraska Beekeeper’s Association for more information. Finally, your own responsible use of pesticides is important. Together we CAN make a difference this time around.
