We live in an unjust society that is rife with divisions of class and race, and designed to serve the needs of a powerful oligarchy.... while pretending to be a democracy of an equal people. We live in said unjust society all the time, but many of us of privilege can go years, sometimes whole lives believing in the myth. For the most marginalized, they see the reality of racism, classism, and injustice every day. If there is a benefit to such a day as today, it is that, for a brief moment the reality of our unjust and unequal nation is highlighted blatantly enough to shine through the myth of democratic equality. And maybe, just maybe, a few more people will stop believing in the myth of America... There will never be any real justice or equality until we do.
