We live in interesting times. While technology advances will not result in sustainability without a radical shift in our priorities and resource models, I do think it is interesting that the level of technology that civilians have access to is gaining on what was formally only available to states and corporations. We need to develop our own open-source patents and schematics for 3D printing using something like the GPL, so that no corporation can claim to have exclusive ownership of shapes and designs to be printed out. You should have every right to download a 3D printing schematic online and print it out yourself at home or at a community print-shop. We dont want it to become proprietary so that people will come arrest you for printing out a design that some corporation claims to own.
