We love sound and researched science on the human-canine bond that we can incorporate into our animal welfare advocacy work. One of our favorite sources for this science is the National Canine Research Council. Over the past month, they have shared research on dog bite prevention, police & dog encounters, shelter behavioral evaluations, and public safety. Good stuff! If you havent done so, like them on Facebook - we guarantee they will provide you with resources and reliable research to promote a better understanding of our relationship with dogs.* This study, Do Dogs Get that Eureka! Feeling? published in Animal Cognition, was particularly fun. Through a series of tests with dogs in controlled (structured, predictable) and experimental (unstructured, arbitrary, unpredictable) situations, the researchers concluded that, The experimental animals in our study were excited not only by the expectation of a reward, but also about realizing that they themselves could control their access to the reward. These results support the idea that opportunities to solve problems, make decisions, and exercise cognitive skills are important to an animals emotional experiences, and ultimately, its welfare. In short, successful problem solving makes dogs happy. Eureka indeed! *NCRC you have our tails wagging in appreciation of your work. #angelcitypits #nkla
