For the participants in the Southern Kingfish Association who have spent the past week hanging out at the Golden Nugget and fishing in two major events, whats in the name of their boat may be something humorous, personal, poignant, or a combination of all three. Naturally competitive anglers will use the tools of their trade in naming their vessels. Thus, a number of boats such as REEL ADDICTION, REELENTLESS, REEL ANARCHY, and REEL QUICK can be found on the water. Some morph with time, such as Tommy Hunts of Meeter, Ga., REEL BIG NASTY. My first off shore boat was a 27 foot hydrosport, I called Big Nasty. Then I had a 22 footer that I called Reel Nasty. So now my current boat is REEL BIG NASTY, Hunt said. Nasty is a nickname I got in high school for…well, you dont want to know. Theres the tributes to fishermeans other profession. His crew by the way includes 10-year old Junior Angler of the Year, Tyler Kesler. Some names are performance based, at least according to Arik Bergerman, originally from Israel but now from St. Petersburg, Fla. CALIENTE is Spanish for hot. Weve won so many tournaments people say you are hot. Bergerman says the Spanish word for hot rolls off the tongue easier than the Hebrew ham. Some captains may be paying tribute to famous movies or perhaps referring to the antics of their own crew aboard ANIMAL HOUSE. And high winds wont bother captain Mike Faurot and his crew, as they are KNOT SCARED. Bernard Blair of Savannah, Ga., says his boat SPEED GOAT was named in honor of a late friend of his son. Speed Goat was a nickname he got when he accidentally shot a doe, when he was hunting for bucks on a deer hunt. A doe that gets shot is often referred to as a speed goat. Blair said when his sons friend died it was a fitting tribute to his memory to name the boat SPEED GOAT. Its got nothing to do with the speed of the boat. You want fast, look at em on either side of us, he said with a laugh while docked at Point Cadet Marina behind the Golden Nugget. Its the only Polar (manufactured) boat in the SKA, and by God, its the only boat named SPEED GOAT in the world. Spouses sometimes have a hand in it too. Mike Scott of Cochran, Ga. credits his wife for his boats naming inspiration. My wife told me I was a bonehead for buying a boat. The original BONEHEAD launched in 2006, and BONEHEAD II which competed this week, made its maiden voyage in the 2012 SKA Nationals held in Biloxi. Theres also PENNYWISE owned by Jack Penny of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. I must not be too wise, if Im still in this game, he laughed. He could wind up like the boat captained by David Linsinbigler--PENNY-LESS.
