We may live to see what amounts effectively to the end of the electoral college. The National Popular Vote, recently having been approved in New York, now has a total of 165 electoral votes behind it. It only needs 270 to initiate a new era when the national popular vote decides who becomes President. States who have passed the law are pledged to give all of their electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote, regardless of their own statewide contests. This will take effect as soon as states who have enacted the legislation account for 270 electoral votes or more. So the electoral college will still exist, but it will be irrelevant on a state by state basis.
