We may read wagonloads of books, and carry with us stacks upon stacks of reading material. We may have studied shiploads of texts - enough to fill gorges and ravines. We may go on reading year after, month after month, with every breath, throughout our lives. Only one thing counts, O Nanak!* The rest is time and effort wasted in fulfilment of ego.[8.1] SLOK, FIRST GURU, ASA KI VAR, AG:467.....salok mahlaa pahilaa......."parr parr gadee ladee´ah, parr parr bharee´ah saath,, parr parr berree paa´ee´ai, parr parr gadee´ah khaat.......(*one thing (ik gall): Guru Nanak leaves the question open here as to what, in the light of his teachings, is the one most important thing that counts in life. He has, however, invariably described meditation on God´s Nam as the key factor that unfolds the mysteries of life and ferries the soul back to its long-lost home of everlasting bliss.
