We meet so many wonderful people during the course of work, but there was only one John Keeney. We became friends 40 years ago when I was covering the Patty Hearst kidnapping. I would camp out overnight in front of the Hearst home in Hillsborough in case something developed. John worked graveyard shift for San Mateo Police, and hes stop by to say hi and bring coffee. He always had jokes to share. Hed call spontaneously just to share a laugh. He knew cats, and when I was looking for a kitten, he picked the perfect one for me, not once but twice. What a proud dad he was of Julie, Stacy and David. How he loved his wife Olga. Being a grandfather brought him joy. John passed away yesterday, but what great memories we have. All because our paths happened to cross one night. I know his family will enjoy seeing these photos from the 1984-1986 era.
