We mentioned yesterday, that standing on Hospital Island you were granted beautiful views.. The small Island to the east of Hospital Island is known as Crawl Island. In the days before refrigeration, West End fishermen hauled their harvest to The Crawl, a shallow waterway situated between Ireland Island and its tiny southern neighbour, Crawl Island. Often crawls were cut right into the rocks with access made for the sea water to flow into. In this case, fishermen created enclosures by driving wooden stakes into the seaside mouth of the Crawl and thus creating area to be used to keep fish alive indefinitely. The word is related to both the Afrikaans kraal meaning a stockaded village, and to the American word corral, denoting a fenced-in area for animals. This Crawl was most certainly used for fish at an early point in Bermudian history. (Norwood clearly indicated it on his fist survey - 1613.) (Bermuda Atlas & Gazetteer)
