We met with the surgeon today and had a lengthy discussion about Fultons next phase in care. He has long, thick fibrous strands of connective scar tissue running deep under his skin. Simple releases will not give him the benefits we were hoping for, so Dr. Norbury recommended they begin laser treatments on him. They will be doing 2 types of CO2 laser surgeries, but I cannot remember offhand exactly what they are called at the moment. (sorry! Full brain!) But in summation, they will give him the first round of laser surgery on all scars from the bridge of his nose down to his chin. The changes from this one treatment will probably not be too obvious to the naked eye, but it will begin to soften the scars on his face so he can move it better. The scars are still so stiff, even with massage, that it is definitely time to do this for him! These will not be the usual laser treatments the medical fields have been using in the past, as they are still in a bit of a research stage, however top burn surgeons (including those at Shriners) have been doing these procedures for awhile as research and are getting wonderful long term results. So there is hope that he will have a slightly more normal face even before he stops growing. With so many unknowns in life, we feel this is the best option for him at this time, as we do not know what will be available to him down the road. They will also perform the same laser surgery on the huge bulbous scars on his hip. Last visit they removed a large scar surgically - this time they will zap the remaining troublesome ones and compare the differences. The best part of this treatment is that it will be FAR less painful for him overall. And that is music to our ears! Finally, they will do a release and skin graft on his left ear which has been rather ....plicated to maintain. Unlike most ears, cleaning his has been interesting, as he has 2 very deep pockets we also have to tend to several times a week or they become infected. It is difficult to explain, but trust me - fixing this is a good thing. Next visit, they will do the same thing to his other ear where he has only one extra pocket. We head back to the hospital at 6:30am, so if you are late risers, please toss up a prayer or 2 for him this evening before bed. ;) Thank you so much!
