We might roll our eyes at scandalous reality television shows. No one forces you to watch that kind of programming. We can block those shows so children cant see them, but what about television commercials for those series? Theres no telling where theyll appear. Next week, another one of those television series debuts with the familiar premise of a dating competition. The unique twist to this one is that the contestants dont bother to bring any clothing. The clips and dialog used in the shows commercials are not appropriate for children. Weve seen these promos on the kind of family entertainment events which people would typically set their DVR to record for viewing later, when everyone is gathered around the TV. Yes, historically TV shows like that get big ratings which means big money. We understand that. We also understand that the more sensational the commercial the more attention that the show will get. From our experience with broadcasting, these time buys need the approval of Standards & Practices a.k.a. the legal department. Cable channels have the legal eyes and ears. Obviously some of these Standards & Practices people have very low standards. These are the kind of things which fuel those who brand the media as evil. Were very disappointed at the lack of responsibility of some cable channels.
