We missed out on flying a few birds today, some because of shortage of light, others (Goshawk) too heavy to fly today. One that did get out in the last available light was our old (18 1/2 years) F1 generation Harris. Shes not missed a season hunting since 1996! Our season started late this year because of mild weather and work, so this old girl has only recently come to weight. In the last few years, she has had to be slightly keener than historically to get going, but ultimately makes the same old weights between 2lb 9 and 2lb 10. She also occasionally get picky with her slips these days, but she remains devastatingly effective as a specialist hare hawk. Today was just limbering up really before the serious part of the season gets into swing. Here she is looking resplendent on a log, and showing that her agility has not been lost a bit with the onset of age, as she grabs a food morsel by flipping upside down about 20 up. Not bad for a pensioner!
