We must beware of over-reaction, as it is a natural tendency of our minds. Thus when the liberal teaches a merely humanitarian Jesus, we must beware of teaching the deity of Christ in such a way as to neglect his true humanity. When liberals teach that God is merely immanent, we must beware of teaching in such a way as to imply he is merely transcendent. The opposite of a specific error in many matters of theology is not truth, but an opposite error, as the opposite of an Ebionite humanitarianism is a Docetic or Appolinarian denial of the humanity of Christ. This is where the historic creeds and confessions are so useful, they are concise and considered statements of the faith. Those who despise them do not have no creed, they just have a poorly thought-out and unbalanced one.
