We must move away from the culture of eternally depending on relief food and instead grow our own food thereby ensuring our food security”, said the Governor Marsabit County, H.E Amb. Ukur Kanacho this morning during the launch of 8 tractors, 33 motorbikes and 2 motor boats. Some motorbikes were donated by the German Technical Co-operation (GIZ). The governor said it was time the residents of the county living in agriculturally high potential areas seriously consider working hard by tilling their abandoned farms. Amb. Kanacho walked down memory lane by reminding the residents that there used to be a time when Saku sub-county alone harvested a million bags of maize. The governor said that his government was contemplating the prospect of developing at least 5,000 acres of land every year for agriculture. He assured the residents that the county government would also consider buying more tractors each year so that farmers would not suffer shortage on existing ones. Amb kanacho lamented the widespread growing of Miraa particularly in Saku Sub-County and observed that this scenario had largely contributed to the biting food insecurity in the County. He said the County Government would as a matter of grave urgency sponsor a bill in the county Assembly to regulate the production of Miraa. The governor said his government would very soon construct a meat processing plant that is projected at a cost of Ksh 150 million. On his part, the CEC Agriculture. Livestock and Fisheries Dr. James Dokhe said that the department is in the process of developing a Ten-year food security plan dubbed “The Marsabit Food Security plan”.
