We need Food Stamp Photo ID. I’m convinced that fraud in the food stamp (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP) program in Texas is more prevalent than many will admit. I’ve talked to many state employees who have direct experience in the program and they tell me it is real. Cards being sold for cash, other sources of income being hidden. All sorts of clever schemes. And it makes those public servants mad because tax payer money is being stolen and less money is available to help those who truly need it. A common sense measure would be putting a photo of the recipient on the food stamp EBT card. Just like banks put on debit cards. Massachusetts enacted a law in July 2013 to require photo ID on food stamp cards in order to address serious allegations of fraud. Texas should do it too. Of course some people won’t be physically able to buy their food in person and need a friend to make purchases. We can accommodate those situations. Dare I say it, we can look to Massachusetts to see how their new law is working, and then we can do it even better.
