We need a law that limits data sharing between companies. Such things used to be known as collusion. ( OR, they were self-limiting because it was stupid... you definitely did -not- want other companies to know about -your- prospects and customers.) But now, data sharing is one of the primary ways many companies make money. What they dont tell you is that selling customer data is a primary source of revenue for many large companies. Its often the difference between profit and loss for a company like Sears. (Remember Sears?) :D And the funny thing? That income is usually buried in a footnote to an addendum on a financial statement... simply because it doesnt look great to tell yer shareholders that whats keeping the mall stores open are completely non-Craftsman(r)-related revenue items. Now? I cant visit a web site without the next knowing about it. And even if site X has decent security, since they just passed my vitals onto site y, its like computer AIDS. Eventually... some nasty ass disease spreads to -everybody-. I dont mean literal viruses. I mean data sharing of any kind by web sites without your explicit permission is innately virulent... like all weaselly activity. We all nudge, nudge, wink, wink about terms of use notices in 2pt type on every web site and we happily ignore them. But at some point well take them seriously because they wont be a joke anymore. Its just gonna take a few more Target-like episodes. Like most things, its gonna have to hurt.. a lot... in order to be learned from.
