We need a space elevator. You can economically use cosmic resources once you have a space elevator. Build the elevator, use the elevator to send up space-workers. Collect metals from asteroids, refine them in space, drop them in showers in designated deserts, collect the metal in shifts alternating with the scheduled resource showers, use them to build railroads, make railroads to everywhere. Connect all the continents and islands with transoceanic bridges. United planet, nigh-infinite resources and they can be sent from anywhere to anywhere. The sheer scale of the project would not just create jobs, it would create work and resources for cities. Civilizations. The Elevator and space operations will provide the metal to do it. Surefire? No. Dangerous? Yes. Potentially apocalypse inducing? Yes. Worth it? Probably. Let’s do this mankind. This is what we do. Let’s do this. C’mon. Let’s build a space elevator.
