We need to keep our work to build the political power and influence of our community in perspective and context. Things dont happen overnight and we must organize with longterm goals in mind. Politics is an ugly game and our goal is to ensure that in the future we dont ever have to vote in a local or federal election for the lesser of two evils - for now, we must look at the candidates and see which is the better choice for our communities. We dont stop working, advocating or raising our voices for the issues we care about. Joe Lhota supports stop and frisk as a good police policy in its current form, he thinks Commissioner Kelly is amazing and would keep him as commissioner, he wants to give more tax credits to the rich and he has not reached out to us (actually actively declined invitations.) Bill de Blasio supported the Community Safety Act, is against stop and frisk (remember stop and frisk opponents have been doing this work for DECADES), and he would kick Commissioner Kelly to the curb. We have to be nuanced and strategic - something we are learning. Politics is a game we must play and in hopes that the more principled participation of voters creates principled candidates. Voter turnout is KEY. Elections arent the only answer - we will continue to organize around ending surveillance, we have been doing it and nothing will stop us. Just asking for investment in a longterm strategy.
