We need to *stop* conflating membership with identity—this is a core issue both for Conservative Jewish individuals AND our leaders and communities! I am a Conservative Jew because I approach Jewish texts and Jewish observance from a certain mindset, because I find meaning in Conservative Jewish values, and because the principles of Conservative Judaism guide my interaction with the world outside of Judaism. Im a Conservative Jew because of what I LIVE, not where Im a member PERIOD. IF Conservative Jewish institutions support and strengthen my Conservative Jewish lifestyle, then Ill join and take part in building them. IF NOT then Ill build my own support system for my Conservative Jewish lifestyle. But I wont stop BEING a Conservative/Masorti Jew because of an institutions choices. PERIOD!
