We need your support! One of the most important ways you can support German at GSU is to promote our classes, from beginning to advanced. For 3000/4000 level students there is an important class offered in the fall described below that will teach you the value of literature in interpreting German culture and identity. It counts toward all concentrations including Business and IEML. Literature has taken a back seat in recent years to more pragmatic disciplines like business and economics, but any entrepreneur will tell you that cultural misunderstanding will derail the most carefully crafted business plan. Please consider taking a course that focuses on narrative and identity and you will develop a deeper understanding of the language you love and the traditions of those who speak it. German 4411 is on the theme of “Erzählen und Identität.” We will discuss connections between storytelling and identity, asking what the famous stories in the German literary past and present can tell us about the changing meanings of gender, race, class, religion, and nation over time. Students will consider why literature matters and learn how to analyze it. There will be regular reading assignments from texts chosen for their accessibility to language learners, including short stories, poems, and plays. The course is taught in German, fulfills a requirement for the German major and minor, and is open to students at the 3000- and 4000-levels. German literary history is a window to German culture.
