We no longer have to kick-start the Philippines’ - TopicsExpress

We no longer have to kick-start the Philippines’ industrialization in the hope of advancing as a nation. From a non-industrialized nation, we could leapfrog to this technological age, and even become one of the leading countries, in terms of creating a perfect society. And money will have nothing to do with this. Considering all the Philippines’ natural and human resources, we are wealthy enough. Unfolding before us—with more clarity than Joseph Estrada’s pro-poor programs (Erap Para Sa Mahirap), or Gloria Arroyo’s “Strong Republic”, or Noynoy Aquino’s Straight Path (Daang Matuwid)—is not something only vaguely drawn up to serve a political campaign, but a real roadmap for a wholly new way of life for Filipinos. It is by no means a Utopia. For a perfect society, if there is such a thing, will not stay perfect for long, as new problems will constantly pop up in the process of its evolution. Different times will bring different challenges, from ecological threats to dangers of terrorism, to tendencies of the powers-that-be to authoritarianism. What we could have instead is some kind of a practical utopia, which might even be better. It wouldn’t be the perfect, standardized, super clean, automated socialism that is static or frozen in unreal perfection as portrayed in many science fiction movies. But certainly it will be more preferable than the one we have. It wouldn’t be disease-free, nor would it be without political strife. But it’s very likely that it’ll be a society that is ultra democratic, less militaristic, more humane, more efficient, and more cooperative even amidst an explosion of diversities. And hopefully, it will be in better balance with the biosphere and no longer perilously reliant on abusive subsidies from the planet. It wouldn’t be easy. But it is also not impossible.
