We now know that Type II diabetes can be reversed in many patients. This is especially so when the Diabetic patient is overweight. There are now safe and simple key-hole operations that can have a huge effect on the diabetic state. These operations were initially designed to treat obesity but over the years surgeons realised that overweight diabetics recovered from their diabetes after the operation even before they have lost much weight. The reason this happens is that these interventions cause changes in the hormones produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Hormones which raise blood sugar are inhibited and hormones which lower blood sugar are stimulated. The combination of these two effects cause blood sugar lowering which is independent of insulin. Most Type II diabetics do produce some insulin though not enough to keep their blood sugar normal. Patients who undergo these operations which are now called metabolic surgery often have an improvement in their diabetic status at discharge from hospital. The anti diabetic effects have also been shown to be long lasting.
