We officially kicked off the “Keep Steve Whisenant Sheriff Campaign” August 1, 2014. I want to thank recently retired Morganton Department of Public Safety Chief Mark Tolbert, a proven and respected law enforcement professional, for his endorsement of my candidacy. Chief Tolbert, as I did, came through the ranks of the agencies we ended up leading. Although I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor degree in criminal justice and was a member of the first graduating class of a prestigious three year national leadership development program, those experiences did not fully prepare me to be a sheriff or a federal chief. While advancing through the ranks of two law enforcement agencies, I experienced time and time again the significant gulf between perception and reality and between words and actions. I’ve been blessed with 37 years of law enforcement experience and leadership; I will continue to draw upon those while pursuing proactive, professional, and trusted law enforcement for you, the citizens of Burke County, as your Sheriff.
