We often argue morals and envisage that our society be one that is based on equity ,rule of law and be democratic. Living in the west we are constantly serve with a remember by our (big brother nations at the top tier )of how far back we linger ...with respect to our political and social system . Why not? Our nations faux pas with respect to democracy is no secret . We run a society that seem at times irredeemably corrupt . Our electoral process might be legit --but with a constitution that supports a winner take all, whoever wins hold the keys to hell or heaven .In a society where voting is conduct along racial/ethnic lines you can rest assure that the group that wins will operate in favour of their support base. It has happened in the past and it is playing before our very eyes today * however to a higher degree . The last American ambassador to Guyana was very active, vociferous in his support for a functioning democracy, he threw his weight behind concern groups and by extension all Guyanese who were calling for the staging of the Local Government elections which havent been held in over two decades . His contention was : in a true democracy ( which Government purportedly endorse) the rule if law is ubiquitous and pursued relentlessly for the sake of the people. It is evident that this aspect was clearly missing--- thus disqualify us as a true democracy . According to our local media the Ambassador often engage Government on the topic of democracy I guess it was through those engagements that comittment was made and in partnership with Government and NGos a programme was drafted......that would have help to truly enhance the democratic process . In the midst of propose plan the ambassador continued to voice his concern which in the eyes of the Government was an act of betrayal ,their position was that there is an understanding or agreement with regards to the project that the ambassador is spearheading and find it rather strange that he is out in the public making pronouncments on a number of issues that is outside his purview. The media both local and social had a field day of this one. Sebsequently an agreement on project was met by both parties which eased tension. The ambassador tenure came to an end sometime last month but before he departed a party was hosted at his residence in celebration of the 4thJuly (American independence day) many dignitaries, Government officials , media , and the not so dignified. I was not there but I would want to believe it was celebrated jubilantly and I wont envy them ,they have much to be proud of. A Minister of the Government offered a speech steered off into what some might deem condescension. She told the ambassador in no umcertain terms that he is a Dutch Axe or what we call today double standard they rest is history. I believe that the U.S. foreign policy has always been in their interest and still is . This is not to say that countries do not benefit from this and that many countries especially those that are young as ours cannot learn a thing or two . The fact is countries like ours need a fully functioning democracy in order for us to grow and develop . But then there are countries that are worst off with the U.S. and E.U. intervention. The article below is just one of many that corrobates this. This goes to show that there is a tipping point and that some of the strategies that the U.S. and E.U. Nations are using is in consistent with the changing time.
