We old duffers, so often forget that once we have lived through a few experiences in our lifetime that we are on our own. We are independent. We are free to do what we want, think what we want, believe what we want to believe----and live as though we are in charge of ourselves. Its a little scary, that being independent, not only being left to ones own resources, but to have to assume the responsibility for the choices you make. It is also a time of great freedom. After a lifetime of learning how to be, we suddenly find ourselves being. Instead of preparing for the great feast of life---we find ourselves at the table---eating. All too aware that dinner isnt going to last forever, and the dishes are waiting in the kitchen. Grasping the idea that we are not going to grow up to be a cowboy, or an astronaut, but are what we have become, is cause for celebration. What a deal it is, this learning that we live as we are, in the right now, and need to either poop or get off the pot. (I love the sheer poetry in the old sayings ). What a challenge it is, to face each day knowing that you will soon have one less day to live---and so should not waste the time----waste the energy, waste the opertunity to fill that day with whatever joy, whatever beauty, whatever goodness you can manage to scrape up. How great it is to reach the stage of your life where you stop imagining what you should be and find the peace in being who you are. Young people might have their beautiful bodies, the sense of their own self importance, the dream of a sparkling future----but we old duffers, we learn the value in being happy old farts------and that is one of the great gifts living teaches us all. Learn to be happy----then be happy. Its quite simple.
