We pay so much attention to title- giving (anyone notice the spike in coronations and bequeathal of chieftaincy titles paid for?). We are so shallow and easily carried away by deceptive hero-worship to the point that all some people aspire to is to have streets and estates named after them not because of their legacy but because they paid for it in one way or the other. It is horrible that people are revered based on their possessions and not by the substance in them. It is about time we took a cue from our western counterparts and break the barriers within the system that encourage pretense and eye-service. This hypocrisy is beneficial to none but those with the desperate need to be praised to the skies and until we get to the point where according to Albert Einstein: “Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized,” we may just as well keep living in our façade.
