We posted the following in reply to another post, but feel many of you may wonder about this, so lets talk about our adoption fees. We want you to have an understanding of how much your support really means and say THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to us. We make every effort to keep fees within reason, yet base them on adoptability with many factors to consider. Age (lets face it, puppies demand a higher fee even though they also usually demand a lot more work!), temperament and personality, health issues or special needs (are they blind, deaf, hip or joint issues, amputees, allergies, skin conditions etc.), demand for breed, history (did they live in a puppy mill with no human contact, were they abused or neglected). Two things weve never based an adoption fee on: 1) is it a pure bred? Even with papers! Papers actually dont mean as much as people think they do, and mutts can often be more loving and healthier, so dont be fooled by papers! Weve adopted out many dogs that were pure bred for a lower fee than many of our mutts! and 2) weve never based a fee on how much money we have invested in an animal. Many cost us well over $1,000 for the veterinary care they need, but that has never been a consideration in setting the fee. If we did, we wouldnt have to worry about fundraising. Our operating budget runs over $300,000 per year, with veterinary bills making up over 1/3 of that at over $100,000 per year, with extremely generous discounts extended by the vets we use, just to keep the doors open. The money we collect from adoption fees doesnt come close to that. In fact, we LOSE money on every cat we place. Our volunteers who hold fundraising events and those of you who support our efforts by donating when you receive our annual newsletter (which you should receive any day!), or by donating online or when we post a need on our Facebook page, and by sending much needed items like canned dog food, laundry detergent, blankets, etc. are the reason we can help so many animals in need, and without your help our doors would close. Although we are non-profit and no-kill, rescues are not eligible for State or Federal funding. If we need money, we need to make it happen. Thanks to people like you, our doors are still open, the animals keep coming, and they find loving homes...because of YOU! Thank you for your unwavering support!
