We proceed toward choosing an object of contemplation as base of adaptation, need, and survival in life’s deficits, and we proceed toward choosing an object of contemplation of aesthetics, spiritual divinity, and balance in life’s abundance. We choose based on who we are at the time with the skill set we have and the desires we carry to meet our base instincts of evolutionary development. The basis of individual choices stems from the experiences and skill sets derived from our point of origin within the external influences of environment, family, friends, education, and the internal individual ability to evolve. Any object can be selected to direct the mind into the process of samyama, however the most basic character development and skill set must be present in order to reach awareness of the object. Awareness is like the 0 on the number line. We become aware there is something there when we allow ourselves to let go of preconceived notions and see that there are greater possibilities (like rungs on the ladder that carry you to a destination.) We see the infinite possibilities of objects when we reach Samyama only to discover that the beauty of life is not the object but rather the detachment from any and all objects as our body, mind, and spirit connect into one infinite being. The basis of choice is the awareness of where we currently are in our evolutionary process as an individual spirit in a collective of infinite possibilities to the greater sense of our common and humbled position in relation to all that exists in precious life around us. Thus when meditation (listening), prayer (gratitude), and concentration (the detailed focus on the actions we take, the choices we make) we reach a state of oneness. This is samyama.
