SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO RECEIVE $1.5 MILLION IN GRANTS Amounts from $50,000-$250,000 (Marion, IL) Baysinger Architects of Marion, IL assisted 14 schools in Southern Illinois receive maintenance and energy grants totaling more than $1.5 million. The grants will be used to fund work to keep buildings up to code for safety and energy efficiency. Earl Kleidon, Engineering Coordinator for Baysinger Architects, says the firm helped the schools by providing project cost estimations and projected savings amounts. “We figure the cost of construction and repair for maintenance grants, and saving for energy grants,” Kleidon said. “The schools fill out an application to the state and use these amounts to request for the grants.” Kleidon said the state provides these grants to make improvements on school buildings to make them safer and more energy efficient. Maintenance grants can be used to repair roofs, floors, paint and other structural components of the school. Energy grants are used to replace outdated heating units, windows, doors and insulation to make the buildings more energy efficient. 14 schools received maintenance grants at $50,000 each. They include: Anna-Jonesboro CSHSD #81, Cairo CUSD #1, Chester CUSD #139, Cobden CUSD #17, Egyptian CUSD #5, Fairfield Community HS #225, Five County Vocational, Goreville CUSD #1, Meridian CUSD #101, Norris City CUSD #3, Steeleville CUSD #138, Trico CUSD #176, and Vienna SD #55. Four schools received energy grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. They include: Cobden CUSD #17, Egyptian CUSD #5, Meridian CUSD #101 and Tri County Special Education. Kleidon said that all of the schools already have plans for what they intend to change on the buildings, and that work is could begin in the summer when the schools are closed.
