We really are trained throughout life to be a perfectionist and that it is a good thing. I mean, striving for perfection--how can that be bad? Well, striving to be better is a good thing and something we should be doing continually, but striving for perfection sets us up for failure and more accurately, it sets us up to fear failure. When we believe that we need a certain outcome in order to be good enough we instantly set ourselves up for stress, disappointment and allow ourselves to live on victimhood street when we dont achieve it. Being a perfectionist is about having expectations, for yourself and others. Perfectionists try to control outcomes, and when they inevitably cannot, they fear the resulting failure, so they end up playing it safe. Not only does this instill fear of failure in you, but also all those who look up to you as an example. They see you expect perfection from them and therefore they will begin fearing failing as well. Trust is the opposite of control. And what is ironic is when you trust, you are in the most control because you realize anything can happen at any moment, and you dont fear that-you are at peace and can handle any circumstance you are faced with :). Replace perfectionism with TRUST. Proverbs 3:5-6
