We really enjoy the idea of equality and relentlessly espouse the virtues of pulling ones self up by their bootstraps. I love those stories as much as the next man. But we only appreciate them because of the inherent improbability. If youre going to constantly bring up a near miracle as evidence of something everyone should be expected to attain, you owe it to yourself to be a tad more educated about what youre encouraging and realize all that goes into shaping what you eventually become. Im not discouraging anyone, Im speaking to certain realities few people care to invest the time to learn about because its much easier speaking in platitudes. Delve into epigenetics a bit if youre curious about how environments can shape behavior, mental health, susceptibility to certain diseases, etc... even before a child is born. Add that to what they may face after arrival. I dont now the answers, but I know we definitely need to invest more into people that deserve the opportunity to emerge victorious from their tumultuous beginnings. Ive been interested in all this for a while, and I expect it to make its way into the criminal justice system eventually along with other questions regarding our interpretation of free-will. All fascinating and troubling at the same time.
