We received a letter from Dr. Murphy yesterday. I wasnt excepting a letter, as we already received the follow up letter from his appointment. However, this one just confirms what I already knew about his lack of social ability. But its never easy reading these about your child... Gavins past medical history was reviewed at length. Also, an in-depth review of communication, Socialization, Interests/Behaviours, Academics and Services Provided to Gavin and his family was completed. Severe anxiety and obsessions are a primary concern and Gavin would benefit from increased sensory programming. Ive included a referral to an OT. Gavin will need specific and direct teaching to learn appropriate socialization skills. He will need modelling and teaching to learn appropriate ways to initiate, continue and terminate social interactions. Ideally, it would be helpful if some of this teaching can occur on-line i.e. While social interactions are happening (i.e. During unstructured times). Gavins family and teachers might find it helpful to consult Carol Greys series of books: The New Social Stories Book and Taming the Recess Jungle for further suggestions. I want Gavin to continue with Karate and have a Big Brother/Mentor put into place for him; preferably as soon as possible if it hasnt already been put into action.
