We received some very unexpected news today on Champ. To recap, Champ was found on the side of the road several weeks a ago, before coming to Doxie Tales. He had a perineal hernia, terrible teeth and needed to be neutered. The game plan was.... antibiotics for two weeks (because of severe dental disease) a dental, and two weeks later, hernia/neuter surgery. Our vet took xrays of his mouth before beginning his dental this morning. She could not believe what she saw. Champ has no upper jaw. None! Dental disease, bacteria and infection have caused his top jaw bone to completely deteriorate. There is nothing holding his upper teeth in place but tissue. It was decided that removing any of the top teeth could cause serious damage. They did an extensive cleaning of the upper and lower gums and teeth. He also had extractions on the bottom. Apparently, this is much more common in the bottom jaw of neglected dogs. The top jaw bone not only is the basic structure to hold the teeth below it in place, but also the structure to hold the nose above it into place. But for now, its remarkably, all okay. On a positive side, the Dr. was very pleased to see Champs physical condition. He truly looks amazing, thanks to Eleanor Adams, his foster mom, and Darriona, her grand daughter. Champ is now a happy dog and the vet said he came in wagging his tail! His hernia has not gotten any worse and is not considered an emergency at this point. Our vet examined it thoroughly. The new game plan..... Champ will continue antibiotics and his soft food and pumpkin diet to keep his poop nice and soft. This will prevent strain on the hernia area. He also will not have to chew, so there will be no pressure on his teeth. Eleanor and Darriona will monitor him very closely and take him to the Dr immediately with any concerns or changes. What I believe to be amazing is that he is not experiencing pain (both Eleanor and the vet believe this to be true.) As of today, Champ is now a forever foster for Doxie Tales (he will not be available for adoption.) We are not sure what his future will hold, but what we do know is that he is special, very loved, being well taken care of, sleeps in the big bed with Darriona every night, and being spoiled in a really good way! A huge thank you to Eleanor and Darriona, who have welcomed Champ into their home and hearts for as long as he is with us. He is not in pain and he has no life threatening problems at this time. After consult with the Dr, and based on her advice, we are not considering additional surgeries at this time. Thank you to everyone who donated for Champ! His vet bills to-date are right at $800 (which includes the initial exams, vaccines, heart worm test, microchip, consultations, x-rays and dental today.) The money we raised for Champ was greater than his current vet bills. Anyone who donated to Champ is more than welcome to private message me on Doxie Tales and request a refund. This will be confidential and there will be absolutely no judgement placed on anyone!! If you do not want a refund, additional funds will be used on either Champs future care or for other rescued Doxie Tales dachshunds. I want to close by saying.... Champ was happy today and he looked fantastic. We hope he is with us, pain free, for a long time. Of course, no one knows what the future entails but what we do know is that this chapter of Champs life will be one filled with love and affection. A special heartfelt thank you to Eleanor and Darriona! Thank you. Love, Ginger from Doxie Tales Photos: Champ at his Drs appt today
