We received this at work, just FYI. It may be old news now but just in case: IMPORTANT NOTICE - “Ransom ware” Virus Alert There have been reports from around ***** operating companies of instances of “ransom ware” viruses which lock down a laptop or desktop computer’s systems and demand that the user pay a ransom to unlock his / her computer to access files. The most widely known version of the virus is called Cryto Locker, but there are many versions or names of this virus in circulation. We ask your assistance in protecting our computer systems from this virus and thinking carefully before clicking on attachments from unknown or unfamiliar sources. The virus, once installed on a computer, may lock out access to files and system functionality or lock out browser access. The user will receive a pop‐up message or email demanding a payment in some form to release the system or browser. Sometimes these viruses open up sites which appear to be government agency sites and allege that the user has committed some crime or violation and must pay a fine to avoid further prosecution. These “government sites” are fakes and are not connected with any government agency. If you receive a notice from the FBI, the Department of Justice or a local law enforcement agency advising that you have committed a crime and must pay a fine to unlock your computer or unblock your browser, your computer has been infected. Do not pay any ransom – instead, contact your IT help desk immediately. While most viruses are designed to control Microsoft operating systems, here are versions of the ransom ware viruses that can attach themselves to different operating systems and browsers, including Apple OS systems. Regardless of what system in use, employees should take steps to avoid infection on company computers. What to do to avoid getting one of these “ransom ware” viruses on your computer – • Make sure the antivirus application on your computer is activated and is bringing in updates regularly. Contact your IT help desk is you are not sure whether you have antivirus software on your computer or cannot tell if the system has installed recent updates that may protect against this virus. • As always – DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS, particularly zip files – when you do not know the sender or are not sure about why the sender may be sending you a file. In some cases, the viruses capture the address book of one user and send emails under that user’s name to others. • Make sure your computer operating software is receiving and installing updates automatically. Many of the standard software providers have initiated patches which may reduce the ability of these ransom ware viruses from capturing and controlling your operating system.
