We released the new film! Moving You Vol. 7 “Made in Mauritania: An Instructor-trainee Relationship without Borders” https://vimeo/96606442 People may think that I’m a tough, global traveler, who seeks for exotic adventures, such as going about in Sao Paulo being escorted by the police officers with machine guns, or eating with indigenous people of the Arctic Circle on the snowfield of -30 °C. I appreciate that “Moving You”, commissioned by YAMAHA, has lead me to these precious experiences, but I myself would not have even dreamed of them, as my personal interest has been focused on Japan. I would rather wander around in Japan than in other parts of the world for the rest of my life… That’s why I was to find something Japanese even when I was in the Sahara. The Moving You vol.7 presents you something very Japanese I witnessed in Mauritania, the country of the Sahara and the Atlantic in Africa. Here, you will meet Mr.Tsuneshige Nozaki of YAMAHA, a Japanese shipbuilding expert who was born in Nagasaki Prefecture as a son of shipwright. His expertise covers from a wooden vessel to a cutting-edge racing yacht. Mr.Nozaki is Japanese from start to finish and crosses the border of religion and culture without altering his Japanese style. What I see in him is the pride for “working”, which reminds me of what Lévi-Strauss pointed out as the uniqueness of Japanese attitude for labor. Mr.Nozaki is consistent in his belief of working, which is controlled not by surveillance, but by his own autonomy. He, together with many other Japanese who are working at the port of Nouadhibou, is the embodiment of the Japanese work ethic. YAMAHA’s development aid project is highly appreciated in Mauritania not only for their skills to be taught, but also for their existence as the catalysis, which triggers the urge to learn new skills. I’m positive that the Nouadhibou will become a worldly known port in the near future, and what Japanese workers have left will remain to exist in the Mauritanians’ mind. Would it be too much if I say that we Japanese can be connected to the people globally through something very Japanese? I would like to see more evidence for supporting my hypothesis, and share the evidence with you, if I could find any, through the images. Please join us and listen to what Mr.Nozaki has to tell in Moving You vol.7! (Director Nino) chance-maker.jp/blog/movingyou7
