He was the son of the late George and Iris (Kurau) Pond and was born on August 19, 1936 in Torrington, CT. Ron attended Torrington schools and was a 1954 graduate of Torrington High School where he excelled at playing football. His passion for football continued throughout his life, when he played for Central Connecticut State University. Ron’s Uncle Raymond (Ducky) Pond was head football coach at Yale University and produced two Heisman Trophy winners in the mid 1930’s which resulted in Ron being a lifelong Yale University football fan. Ron was proud to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps for six years, where part of his service included training Marines as a Drill Instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. He was a respected Hospital Administrator for over 40 years where he worked for Yale University Medical School in New Haven CT, Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence RI, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill ME, and Edgehill Newport, in Newport, RI. He was a member of the American Academy of Medical Administrators. He will be remembered as an amazing story teller, with an incredible sense of humor. He had a beautiful voice, and loved to sing, and was a true gentleman who would light up any room he entered. Other joys in Ron’s life were teaching his children, and grandchildren how to fish, and camp, he never met a dog he didn’t like, he was an avid history buff, and loved watching any movie about any war, and he knew his way around the kitchen making the best potato salad known to man….above all else, he adored being with his family. He touched many in a positive way, and he will forever be remembered for having a loving heart and an open mind and always opened his home to anyone who might be in need of a warm bed, a meal, and a hot cup of coffee. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary (Brooks); his daughters, Pamela Roche, and her husband Dan of Arundel Maine, and Cynthia Anderson, and her husband Devin of Wrentham Massachusetts; a brother, William “Billy” Pond of New Hartford Connecticut; eight grandchildren: Shelley and Mary Champlin; Tristan, Ellie, Tucker and William Anderson; and Delaney and Camden Roche. He is pre-deceased by his daughter, Catherine Pond Champlin who died in 1994, and his brother, George Pond.
