We respectfully note the passing of the following residents, current or former, whose obituaries follow: Claudette Fitzsimmons, Michael Hurley, Richard Mendall, Germaine Sullivan, and Margaret Peg Welch. Obituaries Claudette M. Fitzsimmons, at 82 Former Hull selectman Claudette M. [Marshall] Fitzsimmons, of Pembroke, died June 5. She was 82. Mrs. Fitzsimmons was born, raised, and educated in Cambridge. She and Ed, her husband of 45 years, raised a family in Hull. She always believed in giving back to the community and supporting various charities and causes. She served three terms on the Hull Board of Selectmen, from 1980-1989; and then shared her passion for art when she opened Quilters Delight in South Weymouth. Mrs. Fitzsimmons also loved baking, gardening, and animals, but most of all enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, of whom she was most proud. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Fitzsimmons leaves her devoted children, Dian Elkins of Hingham, Jim Godinho and his wife, Suzanne, of Middleboro, David Godinho and his husband, Ken Heckman, of Weymouth, Glenn Fitzsimmons and his companion, Lauren Carberry, of Weymouth, and Scott Fitzsimmons and his wife, Karen, of Scituate. She also leaves seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many extended family members. Funeral services have been held, with burial this morning at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472. See Keohane for online condolences. Michael D. Hurley, at 86 Michael D. Hurley, of Hull, 86, originally of South Boston, died June 6. Mr. Hurley was a World War II Navy veteran. He was aboard a ship in the first convoy to approach Tokyo Harbor the morning the peace treaty was signed, Sept. 2, 1945, that finally ended the war. Mr. Hurley earned the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, 1 Star, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the Army of Occupation medal for his wartime service. He sustained service-connected disabilities for asbestos exposure and hearing loss and, as a disabled veteran, was active for many years with the DAV chapters in South Boston and Randolph, as well as being state commander of the Massachusetts DAV for 1975-76. He served as a member of the DAV’s state Finance Committee for many years, and he was often appointed to national offices of the organization. Mr. Hurley also served as commander of Post 400 of the American Legion, the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post 561 VFW, and South Boston Chapter 22 DAV. He retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts after 36 years, employed mostly as a police officer, first with the state Department of the Public Works, which became the Capitol Police, and later was transferred into the State Police. He retired in 1984. After three weeks off, he started working for Randolph Memorial Chapter 39 DAV and retired from that after 25 years. Loving husband of AnnMarie [McDonough]; Mr. Hurley also leaves six children; four stepchildren; a brother, John “Wacko” Hurley of South Boston; and many extended family members and friends. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., at Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham. His funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann’s Church, with burial in Hull Village Cemetery, where Mr. Hurley’s late grandson, Michael James, rests in peace. Richard P. Mendall, at 56 Former Hull resident Richard P. Mendall died peacefully on Thursday, June 5, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, surrounded by his loving family. He was 56. Mr. Mendall was born in Attleboro, raised and educated in Hull, and was a graduate of HHS Class of 1976. He was a US Army veteran and was employed as a laborer in the construction industry for many years. He previously had worked as a truck driver. Cherished son of Dorothy Ann [McSharry] Gilbert of Braintree and Richard J. Mendall of Chelsea; he was the former husband of Donna F. [Kershaw] Mendall, and the devoted father of Melissa A. Mendall, both of Quincy; the brother of Ronald J. Mendall of Hull, Thomas W. Mendall of Quincy, Stephen M. Mendall of Weymouth and the late Kelly M. Mendall; and the dear friend of Lynne M. Cignarelli of Humarock. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 4-7 p.m., at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Ave., Quincy. His funeral Mass begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Ann’s Church, 757 Hancock St., Quincy. Interment with military honors follows, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Germaine Sullivan, at 94 Germaine Sullivan, of Hull, formerly of Hingham, died June 8, 2014. She was 94. Germaines family gave her the most enjoyment in her life. She was extremely proud of her service as a nurse in Britain during WWII. In fact, that was where she met her future husband and followed him back to the United States to begin their life together. She grew up in Wales, always loved the ocean, and kept her British citizenship for many years. She and her husband traveled the world together, but Hingham was always home. She is a long-time member of St. Pauls Parish and a faithful communicant. Her family will always remember her strong will, fierce independence, fun loving nature and keen knowledge of current events. Beloved wife of the late Joseph E. Sullivan. Loving mother of Maureen Grote and her husband Jim of Ind., Janet Sullivan of Ind., Patricia Sullivan of Hull, James Sullivan and his wife Debbie of Pa., William Sullivan and his wife Suzanne of Ariz. and R.I. Grandmother of William, Anna, Sarah, Robert, Matthew, Michael, Daniel, Benjamin, Christopher and Theodore. Great-grandmother of Elizabeth, Rebecca, Jessie, Samantha, Kylie and Tristan. Daughter of the late Dr. Thomas James and Anna (Ahearne) James. Sister of the late William and Maureen James and Jacqueline Coulthard. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. [Flaherty] Welch of Hull, formerly of Scituate, died June 5 at the age of 90. Mrs. Welch grew up and was educated in Dorchester. She lived in Scituate before settling in Hull, where she lived since 1969. She worked for AT&T for more than 25 years before retiring in 1988. After retirement, Mrs. Welch went to work for Rockland Trust, where she worked for another 10 years. She loved going on trips to Foxwoods with “the girls” and traveling to Arizona to visit her daughter. She enjoyed family gatherings and holidays where she made her famous Irish bread. Her family was the cornerstone of her life. Beloved wife of the late James J. Welch, she was the loving mother of Margaret Boughter and her husband, Tom, and Gerard E. Welch and his wife, Joanne, all of Maine, Maureen Rivieccio and her husband, Walter, of Hull, Kathleen Matson and her husband, Terry, of Arizona, Rosemary Goldrick of Hingham, Patricia Welch of Weymouth, James J. Welch and his wife, Karen, of Buzzards Bay, and Christine McGowan and her husband, Brian, of Scituate. Mrs. Welch also leaves a brother, James Flaherty, and his wife, Theresa, of Medford; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours today [Monday] 3-8 p.m. at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham.
