We retired at age 38 in 1991. At the time, we were overwhelmed with owning a restaurant and with Billy’s job managing a Dean Witter brokerage office in central California. So we inventoried our assets and decided to travel the world while we were still young and vibrant. Now, 24 years later, we live on less than $30,000 net spending per year while hopping around the U.S., Central America and Asia. We dont deprive ourselves, so what is our secret? Here’s the answer: We have chosen not to devote our time or money to support a complicated infrastructure in our lives. We have no US-based health insurance, no mortgage and no monthly subscriptions such as a cell phone plan, cable bundle or country club fees. We are debt-free and don’t own any big toys, like a boat.
