We routinely post recordings of sacred music on the Christianity and Esotericism FaceBook page. We cannot deny that this reflects our own passion for the sacred musical genre. However, it also reflects the belief that music serves as one of the most important media through which higher reality impinges on our world. Music is a responsibility of the Fourth-Ray Ashram headed by the Master Serapis. We believe that minor and major initiates of the ashram have composed and performed inspirational music throughout the ages, and that the process continues today. Recent articles in the esoteric literature have explored this avenue of world service. Alice Bailey, writing for the Master Djwhal Khul, says of Serapis: “He is the Master upon the fourth ray, and the great art movements of the world, the evolution of music, and that of painting and drama, receive from Him an energizing impulse. At present He is giving most of His time and attention to the work of the deva, or angel evolution, until their agency helps to make possible the great revelation in the world of music and painting which lies immediately ahead” [“Initiation, Human and Solar,” 60]. Reference to the Master Serapis’ liaison with the Deva Evolution is most significant, since it is widely known that music attracts ethereal beings, and sacred music attracts a particularly high order of angels. We do not know what timeframe was implied by “lies immediately ahead.” Bailey wrote those words in 1920 or thereabouts. But we do understand that the Fourth Ray will begin its cycle of global manifestation in 2025. Not everyone who composes, performs, or listens to sacred music may be an initiate, but our collective participation strengthens the influence of the Fourth Ray of Harmony and helps bring harmonious energy into the planet. Trusting this belief, we shall continue to post on our FaceBook page recordings of works by the world’s greatest composers, performed by the best musicians and choral groups. Perhaps we can hasten, or at least help prepare for, the “great revelation” from music and the arts. Here is one of the greatest works of sacred choral music ever composed: the Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”) from Johann Sebastian Bach’s B minor mass. By any standards, Bach (1685–1750) was a major Fourth-Ray initiate. He left an indelible mark on the music of the Baroque period, and his influence has only increased over the centuries since his death.
