We saved a wild bird from a certain and slow death. A bunch of - TopicsExpress

We saved a wild bird from a certain and slow death. A bunch of us went camping last weekend, but by Monday morning it was just Mike Habersaat and me left. As we were preparing breakfast, we noticed a fluttering in the tree by the lake. We got closer and realized it was a bird caught on a fishing hook left in the tree. He was hanging from his mouth and desperately trying to get free. The branch he was hanging from was about 12 feet in the air, so there was no way for us to reach him. We threw a rope over the branch and were able to pull it down low enough for Mike to grab the bird while wearing a glove so as not to get bit or clawed. I cut the fishing line so we could see how to free the hook that was in the birds mouth and out through the side of his jaw. There was no way he would ever get free of this himself. There must have been some old bait on the hook and the bird went to eat it. I used Mikes multi-tool and bent the hook straight and cut off the barb. Then it was easy to just slide the leftover piece of the hook out of his mouth. There was a small hole on the side of the birds jaw and some dried blood on his feathers, but the wound did not look too severe. Mike released the bird on the ground and he instantly flew away. We are sure that he will be OK. Mike and I high-fived each other with big smiles on our faces and a great warm feeling in our hearts.
